Alabama got a two-year postseason ban, which was unprecedented for violations that didn't include a lack of institutional control. The NCAA wanted to make an example of Alabama, which is exactly what it did. Now nobody is going to self-report violations and self-impose penalties, as Alabama did, because the NCAA won't care and will slam you anyway.
